Kansas
Pheasant, Bobwhite and Scaled Quail Hunt
This
season found us in the plains of Kansas after pheasants,
Scaled and Bobwhite quails during the month of January.
It is quite different country than that of the Mearns
quail, though there are a lot of similarities between
the Bobwhite and Mearns quail. There will always be
something magical about a beautiful cock pheasant
taking off into the horizon. The Scaled quail is a
classic bird regardless of where he is found, though
in Kansas and Oklahoma we found them to hold a lot
tighter than in the more arid desert of Arizona.

on point on a pheasant rooster. Note the endless miles
of public "CRP" fields of Kansas.
That
is Sam Knoy's female "Darling" on the left,
locked on Bobwhite. The picture on the right is of
an abandoned farm. All throughout Kansas there are
abandoned buildings and farms that offer great shelter
for Bobwhites. Note "Frankie" on the right
on point on a covey of Bobwhites holding right next
to the wire fence.

'boys' are on the right. The fun in Kansas and Oklahoma
is to get a "Grand Slam", meaning a Ringneck
Pheasant, Scaled and a Bobwhite quail all in the same
day. In Kansas, you also have to get a Prairie Chicken
to accomplish the "Kansas Grand Slam'. It was
a great trip and we really cannot wait to be back.
